Using Pinterest for Job Search – Candidate view

In my previous post, we discussed about how to use Pinterest for Job postings – a Recruiter view.   Now, let us see how Candidates can use it for Job Search.
Create Resume Boards: Resume pin board should be created highlighting the achievements.  Creative jobs like designers, Infographics, Social media experts, may want to create different resume boards for different activities that they participate in.  Make sure that your board name contains Resume so that it is easily searchable.  For resume examples, click here.
Be Active on Pinterest:  Update your resume and other pin boards in Pinterest with latest information and achievements.  This shows that you are active and throws more light on the latest happenings in your world.
Job Search:  You can search for companies and/or job title within Pinterest.  Recruiters will be posting jobs to Company Pin boards. For example, click here to see the search results for Software Engineer.
So, have you created your Resume pin board yet ?

Using Pinterest for Job Postings - Recruiter view

Now, we know the popularity of Pinterest.  How can we leverage it to attract Talent ?  Here are few thoughts.

Create Pin Boards:  Different Pin Boards should be created based on the Category and/or location etc. For example, one of your Pin Board name could be: "Nurse Jobs - MyHospital".

Add image(s) to Job description: Note that images should talk about the Job.  Here is an example.  See more examples here.  Please note that you can pin videos as well and hence adding video(s) to Job description is also recommended.  For example, you can add a Youtube video which talks about "Work at MyCompany".

Add PinIt button: You can add Pin It button to your Job Details page. This allows the visitors of the career page to easily share it on Pinterest. Read more about Pin It button here.

Search for Candidates:  You can also search for candidates in Pinterest.  Search for "Resume", "My Resume" etc and refine it further for more suitable candidates.

When are you starting to use Pinterest for your recruitment needs?

We will talk about using Pinterest for Job Search - Candidate view in my next post.

Ice Breaker

Thank you for the opportunity, Mr. Toastmaster and a very Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen.

At around 1PM on 27th of Nov 1978, Lord Siva blessed my parents with a baby boy.  By then, they would not have expected that the child would take this long to break the ice :-).

Because of the date and time of my birth, my father was not allowed to see me for first 21 days. He talked to me about it many-a-times but, I did not realize that pain unitl I became a father.

My mother always tells me an incident when I was in my 1st standard. I came home with my report card and I proudly announced my 13th rank in the class to my parents.  My mother explained me patiently about the importance of coming 1st and the whole ranking system.  By the way, did I mention the class strength ? it was 15 :-) .

How many of us here stole money from either father's pocket or mother's handbag ? :-)  During my school days, I was passionate about cycling.  We used to get a cycle for rent for 50 paisa per half-hour.  But, I was never given even a paisa as pocket money.  I still remember those days when I used to steal money from my Grand-pa's pocket for cycling.

Many of you may already know that I am a very big fan of Supreme Hero, Chiranjeevi.  How many of you are ? I think, I was studying 3rd or 4th class when two of his films, were big flops.  At the same time, there was a blockbuster from Balakrishna.  I was seriously dissapointed.  I went into my study room, locked the door, cried a lot and took out one of the many Chiru photos that I had and started scolding him, "See, you stupid fellow.  You should have acted in that Balayya's movie which is a big hit. Your next movie should be a blockbuster, if not I will tear off all your photos."  The next movie was Lankeswarudu, which was again a big flop and you know, what I did ? I postponed the tearing off for the next movie :-)

After my graduation in applied chemistry, I got a job as a chemist.  I rejected the offer and joined MCA for further stuides.  I could not justify my decission to many of my classmates.  But, I soon realized the need for me to work on my comupter knowledge and Hari Kishore taught me with a lot of patience.

I always believed in Guru-Mukha-Vidya i.e., knowlede must come from teacher.  It makes you familiar with the topic and gives you psychological advantage while reading it for exams.  I followed it when I was in school and in college too.

Each of us must have one or more inspiring icons, right?  My role model is, late Mr. Govinda Rao.  While I was searching for a job in 2001, I was fortunate to meet this great icon.  He was an acctuary.  He was around 80+ years old who could not even walk properly and owned around 8-9 apartments in Hyderabad. He had two computers and few MS office books with him.  One day, I could not stop asking him, "why you are still working, when you cannot do it? ".  He explained me, "Never stop working.  You may not be able to stop your body from becoming old, but you can certainly do it with your brain.  At any stage of your life, if you are idle, you are dead."

Once we were out from college in 2001, it was a recission time and with a lot of difficulty I was able to get into my first job.  I was into technology for around 9 years.  I worked on different Microsoft technologies including VB, ASP, VC++, .NET, Sql Server etc in various domains, banking, finance, pharma and HR.

Respecting my interest, Kiran provided me the opportunity to move into my dream role of Product Management.  This is Siva Kumar, working as Product Manager for 2x BrassRing product with Kenexa, Vizag, a proud father of two little devils who is learning about Social and Mobile. and thank you each and everyone for listening to me.

Lucky Diwali

Yes, Happy and Lucky Diwali for my family yesterday. We are saved from a great danger, by God's grace...

Please don't have your daughters wear gowns on Diwali.  Use tights and shirts, a lesson learnt.  I wanted to take pictures in a neat dress and hence, I did not listen to my wife's words :(

Sahiti was very eager to celebrate Diwali with crackers.  I was equally excited to capture all that eagerness in my camera. Sahiti got a cracker in her hands. I jumped and stood in front of my daughter to take her photo.  Suddenly, Sahiti felt something warm and looked back at her gown and at the same time, I saw the fire.  And  the gown that Sahiti was wearing was lit !!!   I could not think of anything else, ran to her, caught the fire with both hands and stopped it by rubbing it with both hands !!!  It burnt my index finger slightly and the gown was half-burnt.  Kid is absolutely safe !!!

Many thanks to God for saving all of us !!!

Product Roadmap

What is it? – Product roadmap defines what is coming up in the Product along with the timeline.  It can be defined for short term or long term or both. It can be defined using a spreadsheet, project file, presentation, picture or any other form.  It is all about planning and development. It talks about the new projects planned and the areas of developments that team is planning to work on.

Why is it? – Product roadmap gives an insight about the product plan.  It is the tool of the Product Management team to show the product vision. It allows customers to know more about the product, its focus and expansion.  It allows marketing teams to talk about the upcoming features.  It allows development and QE teams to plan their activities.

What is in it? – Product roadmap contains the upcoming feature list and the timeframe at a high-level.  Items in this list are based on: market research, client requests, organization’s vision, expansion plans, new customers and their specific needs, internal cost reductions.  Each item is given a brief description and a definite timeline based on its priority; highest priority item takes first slot.

Market Research: Product marketing and Product Management teams do this market research in the domain of the product.  Latest happenings, latest best practices, expert opinions, global implications, trends etc, are the inputs for market research.  This market research can be done through magazines, blogs, social media sites, expert columns, news papers etc.  This is a must to improve customer satisfaction. This is a must to be the frontline runner against competition within the domain.  This is a must to attract new business.  This is a must to attract new talent to work with our product and make it better and better.

Client requests: Client requests play a very important role in determining the priorities.  If a particular feature enhancement impacts the business of client(s), we should give it, higher priority within the roadmap.

Vision:  The vision of the Product and Product Development Company influences certain items within the roadmap.  Certain decisions of the management have to be taken into consideration.

New Customer needs:  New customers, who are running pilot, may need certain feature enhancements for them to go live.  Such items obviously get higher priority.  As always, customer is kingJ.

Internal cost reduction:  Any automation within current manual steps and/or process changes, which reduce the internal costs, are very much important for the success of the product and to serve the customers better.

How to: Internal Product roadmap draft should be created first, to circulate it within the management. After all the necessary modifications, once it is approved, final version of internal product roadmap should be presented internally to all employees. After taking all inputs into consideration, the external Product roadmap can be published and discussed with customers.  Please note that clients do not like lot of changes within product roadmap.  PM team should be very strong at planning and changes to product roadmap reflect the lack of it.

Why difficult to be a Product Manager

I came into Product Management, because of my own interest.  I always wanted to define what to do.  I used to dream of defining the work, when I was actually doing a defined work.  As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, my Director gave me the opportunity and I jumped into this new role with lots of excitement.

But, believe me.. it is not easy to be a Product Manger.  Apart from the most commonly known skill, "communication", two important skills, one should work hard to have/acquire are :

Reading:  One of the toughest tasks on the earth, huh??  Any school-boy or college-girl agrees with me.  One should be reading a lot about the market -- blogs, articles, emails, e-books, client-issues, competitors etc.
  • Your task is not just to merely read the sentences.   Obviously, you will have to understand every bit of it.
  • You can easily get carried away with this reading task, if you don't pay enough concentration.
  • You tend to assume that you understood it, though you did not go through it completely.
  • You don't feel like reading certain articles.  You feel that they are boring.
  • You cannot become a good reader, on day 1.  It needs some time and patience.  Keep trying it and you will get there.
  • Do not go through lot of things on the same day.  Have certain time in your calendar dedicated for it.
  • If you did not understand or if you are not able to concentrate on a certain topic, flag it for future and continue with the next one.

Listening:  This is not easy either.  Hearing is a physical thing, where your ears can hear anything which is audible.  But, listening includes mental-work of understanding what you are hearing.  There are different sources of information, Software Engineers, Quality Engineers, Customers, Customer-representatives, market researchers, other Product Managers, etc.
  • No matter what, you should listen to each and everything that is conveyed to you, as part of the product improvements/suggestions.
  • If you pay too much interest in noting down what you are hearing, you may lose to listen it properly.
  • If you come to a conclusion OR if you start to think about the solution -- while discussing an issue, you are not doing a good job of listening.
  • Repeating whatever you have understood in your own words, is a very good idea, if you have even 1% of doubt in your mind.
  • Preparing an email and circulating it across all the participants, is another good idea to confirm complete understanding.
